NetBeans Twilight Theme!

Those of you who follow us on Twitter might be aware that I’ve recently become smitten with Netbeans. Personally, when coding, I prefer to use a dark theme. It’s less harsh on my eyes. Unfortunately, there simply aren’t many available for Netbeans. After an hour or so of searching, I was able to find exactly one theme — which was mostly specific to Ruby. So, I took it upon myself to convert the popular Twilight theme to Netbeans/PHP! Installation Instructions To add this theme, simply open "Preferences" ("Options" on PC) and click "Import" at the bottom. Then browse for your zip file -- do not unzip -- and click "okay!" That's it.

Different Ways To Format CSS

This post will focus on the different ways to format CSS, which differs from the different ways to organize CSS. Definitely related concepts, but I think organization has more to do with how things are grouped and ordered while formatting has to do with spacing and indenting. Formatting has nothing whatsoever to do with how the CSS functions. These are merely aesthetic choices by the coder. But that’s not to say formatting isn’t important. That would be like saying the choice of canvas isn’t important to a painter. It affects how it feels to write CSS, how easy it is to read, how easy it is to navigate, and how easy it is to revisit and reacquaint yourself with previously written CSS. The reason there are so many choices with CSS formatting is that there are no hard syntax rules when it comes to spacing and line-breaks. View the tutorial

Lightbox/Modal window effect using only CSS

You may call it Lightbox, or Greybox, or Thickbox, but it's always the same effect. When you are on a page, and click on a photo or trig some event, a Lightbox is an effect that fades the pagein the background to show you new content in the foreground. The Lightbox Effect without Lightbox. Lightbox alternative and login method. In the upper example, when clicking on a photo the site fades to black and shows the photo, in the lower one when clicking on "login" the site fades to white and shows the login form. There are tons of Lightbox scripts in the web, each one with its unique features and limitations, but all require massive use of Javascript or the installation of javascript frameworks. In some cases, there are "lightweight" versions with "only" 40KB of Javascript. This example does not want to compete with those scripts, but if you are looking for a simple, 100% CSS, 0% javascript lightbox, this may help you. View the tutorial
